Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics

This week we are talking about Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. This is a
science fiction novel written in 1859. In the 1850’s scientists didn’t know much about what was in
the center of the earth. Since then, science has allowed us to figure out much about the interior or
the Earth.

Over the next three days is to investigate as much as you can. You can use the two readings,
“The Shaping of the Continents” by Peggy Bresnick Kendler and “Earth: The inside Story” by Camilla Calamandrei and this website, www.mrrossitersclass.blogspot.com.

Pick one topic or concept to focus on.

• What are the layers of the earth.
• Why do plates move.
• What are the different ways plates hit each other.
  
• What causes mountains to form.
  
• What causes volcanoes to form.
• What are the different parts of a volcano.
  
• Anything else you want to do, as long as Mr. Rossiter approves.
  

Once you have done some research on your topic, create a way to show or explain to someone from the 1850's what really happens inside the earth. There are three ways you can do this.

1. Create a PowerPoint.
2. Create a poster.
3. Create a model, drawing or demonstration.
1. If you choose to make a model, drawing or demonstration, you must write a 1-2 page explanation as to what your model is showing.
